Job Description

Title: Corporate Counsel, APAC 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the APAC legal team to support all technical, corporate, and commercial operations, including legal drafting, negotiation, and provision of legal advice across all functions in the Greater China country cluster (and potentially other APAC countries depending on need)
  • Work closely with commercial teams to help in developing product, pricing and distribution strategies for new and existing products in Greater China countries (and potentially other APAC countries depending on need)
  • Provide legal induction and training for staff in APAC
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
  • Provide a value-added corporate law insight to help client evaluate and determine risks effectively by identifying and communicating risks associated with complex business activities
  • Manage outside legal counsel where directed and help Head of Legal & Compliance, APAC in ensuring external legal spend is controlled
  • Keep current with evolving relevant legal and business issues, particularly in Greater China countries and the pharmaceutical sector, promoting corporate policies and proactively monitoring company’s business environment
  • International and domestic travel will be required (around 10~20% within the APAC region (primarily the Greater China area) as well as occasional trips to headquarters in California as necessary)

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 4 years of PQE as either a Taiwan qualified, a PRC qualified, or a common-law qualified lawyer (but all applications considered on merit regardless of extent of PQE)
  • Having other Asia region legal qualifications would be a plus but is not required 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with a large firm (in life sciences, commercial or corporate departments), or in-house within the pharmaceutical/biotech industry is strongly preferred
  • Ability to successfully manage the diverse requirements of in-house legal department clients, including:
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively at all levels throughout the organization and externally
  • Being comfortable providing fast ad hoc advice on a variety of day-to-day and strategic legal issues
  • Influencing clients by identifying and communicating the risks associated with complex business activities and provides a value-added corporate law insight to evaluate and determine risks effectively
  • Partnering with clients by considering immediate business/legal issues in a broader business context and identifying and influencing business purposes and objectives
  • Enthusiasm to forge strong relationships and for becoming a business partner with a strong commitment to customer service and legal compliance
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese and strong English and Mandarin Chinese contract drafting, proofreading, and editing skills are a must (ability in other Asian languages would be a plus)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the legal and regulatory framework affecting the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry, particularly in Greater China
  • Superior legal skills, including excellent written, oral and presentation skills; strong negotiation and legal drafting skills; strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills; strong task-focused work ethic with ability to meet tight deadlines and commitments

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the legal and regulatory framework affecting the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry, particularly in Greater China
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese (ability in other Asian languages would be a plus), with English and Mandarin Chinese contract drafting, proofreading, and editing skills
  • Effectiveness serving client needs and operating in complex organizational and regulatory environments
  • Flexible approach to adapt to changes in business needs due to fast paced growth of Business operations
  • Self-motivation with the ability to appropriately prioritize issues, allocate resources and multi-task, working well both independently and with teams
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skill
